Get Professional Help

Sagging straps, loose band, cups too tight and overflowing – it’s so easy to go wrong. If you have never been now is the time. If you have been fitted, but your weight has changed in the last year, guess what? Your cup and band sizes have fluctuated and you need to be fitted again!

It should go without saying, but needs to be said anyway, if you are pregnant or just had a baby, your bra size is going to be completely different and you’ll need to go shopping for a new bra or two. The salesperson will measure your ribcage and your chest – overtop of the bra you’re wearing – and with a quick calculation, determine your band and cup size. Ask her to help you pick out a selection of styles with you, telling her what your needs and preferences are. Don’t be afraid to let her know your budget – there are lots of plus size cheap styles. She should load you up with an armful of models and a few sizes, and once you’ve tried them on, you’ll have a much better idea of what fits and what doesn’t.

Finding the Correct Bra Size

Don’t be anxious if your size changes, it’s perfectly normal. No one cares what your bra size is except you. Trying to fit into an old bra size will only make you frustrated and the wrong size is very unflattering. So, when it’s time to throw them out because they no longer fit, just be ruthless and do it!

To measure yourself, take a soft tape measure (most sewing kits have them) and while wearing your best-fitting bra, measure your body circumference around your upper ribcage, just under your breasts.

Do this in front of a mirror to make sure the tape is straight, and not too tight or loose. This is your BAND SIZE. If the measurement is not an even number, add one inch, and that is your band size.

Then measure yourself around the largest part of your chest. Again, make sure the tape is not loose or pulling too tightly, just firmly in place. Subtract your BAND SIZE from this measurement, and the difference determines your CUP SIZE. For every inch, your cup size goes up.
1 inch = A
2 inches = B
3 inches = C
4 inches = D
5 inches = DD
6 inches = DDD
7 inches = F, etc.
For example: if your band size is 38. Your chest measurement is 42. The difference is 4, so your cup size is “D”. (Letter codes do vary from the US to the UK and Europe, but each level is a one-inch increase.)

What if your breasts are not the same size?

If your breasts are not the same size, remember to fit the cup size to the bigger breast, not the other way round. If necessary, add a little padding to the other, most lingerie stores sell these inserts under a few different names; “cutlets” is a fairly common name for them.

A tip when bra shopping is to bring along a favorite tight t-shirt, and put in on over each new bra to see how it makes your clothes look. You should see an uplifted, smooth silhouette that doesn’t bulge or pucker in the cups. Take a friend along or ask a shop assistant to look for bulges or bra lines at the back too.

I was extolling the virtues of plus size sports bras (yes, plural… I wear both the Activa Zip Front and the Enell) to a friend the other day. I said I don’t care if they give me the “uni-boob” look – I love the comfort and support.
She looked skeptical, saying that she’d heard that tight fitting sports bras can harm your respiratory tract.
Hmmm…that didn’t sound good. I did some research and found out that in 2005 the American College of Sports Medicine’s scholarly journal published an article on just this issue – the threat of sports bras on respiratory function.
The study determined that the sports bra “imparted significantly more pressure on smaller breasted females’ torsos when compared with the fashion brassiere, although this increased pressure did not appear to significantly affect measured lung volumes or brassiere comfort scores. They concluded that wearing a sports bra during does not harm your respiratory tract. In fact, their research indicates that wearing a sports bra during activity is beneficial to reduce breast motion and its related pain.

Activa Zip-Front Plus-Size Sports Bra (ATV107) | Bargain Lycra Bra

This Activa Ultratek Zip-Front Sports Bra model ATV107 is a real find. In my comparison tests, it offers all the comfort and support of the well-known Enell sports bra (the “Oprah sports bra”) at just over half the price. I’m always on the lookout for anything that is plus size, cheap and good quality so this fits the bill.

The Activa Zip Front Bra costs about $38, while the Enell sports bra is about $60. From my comparison tests, the bras are very similar so why pay twice as much? These three photos show wearing the Activa Ultratek Zip-Front Sports Bra in size E, which covers sizes 40DDD, 42D-42DD, 44D. I was pleased to find it fit true to size – I wear a 40DDD and the Activa size E fit me comfortably.
(Like the Enell sports bra, the Activa sports bra does not come in specific band/cup sizes. Rather, they come in sizes 1 – 8 and A – F respectively.)
As you can see, the zip-front, molded cup bra has real hold. It covers my back well, which I find very important for comfort (the more coverage across my back the less weight pulling on my shoulders).
The bra is constructed of Supplex/Lycra® – which to me feels like a firm, soft cotton. Apparently it has moisture wicking properties as well. Come to think of it, the last time I wore this bra was a blazing hot day and I didn’t have the sweating under my breasts that I usually get.
One interesting design feature is the three inside hook closures (one at the top and two at the bottom) that provide a back-up to the zipper. The hooks are easy to do up – in fact, often I’ll just zip up the bra and find that the hooks just automatically hook themselves.
