Despite a never ending stream of hype, mass media exploitation and unrealistic portrayals of women with breasts that “naturally” stand to attention on command (via a little help from augmentation, that is), the actual fact of the matter is, sagging breasts are quite natural.
More and more females, especially those with naturally plus-size breasts are becoming increasingly obsessed with obtaining perky, perfect boobs, yet in actual fact, the breast was never designed by nature to stand at attention.
Why the breast is shaped the way it is
A woman’s breast is made up of milk ducts, glands and fatty tissue. Pectoral muscles are located under the breast mass. Various combinations such as pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss or gain, age and the effects of gravity itself are all determining factors in the shape of our breasts.
The body image brainwash
Making us feel insecure about our bodies is a multi-million dollar industry. Fashion designers admit openly that their runway models are really no more than ‘hangers’ for their clothing lines.
Media icons like Pamela Anderson romp freely (and in slow motion) across a beach, clad in a string bikini that barely covers the nipples of her amble fake boobs and tens of thousands of women across America rush to the yellow pages to investigate plastic surgery. What are we thinking to spend astronomical sums of money and endure the pain of surgery in the attempt to regain the perky breasts of a teenager?
The problem with longing for perfect breasts
This undue emphasis on perfect bodies has impacted our youth and you see children (especially girls) who are becoming obsessive about their body image from the tender age of ten. Popular culture propagates the myth of the perky breast as a defining icon by its overt attention to cleavage.
Fashion moguls consistently design clothes that accentuate a woman’s breast and encourage the perky breast myth. Designers and scientists alike dedicate many hours to perfecting a bra that not only lifts and separates but juts out from the body like a perfectly formed cone.
Let’s cease the illusion
Every woman’s breasts are as individual as they themselves are. In my opinion, the sooner a woman ceases to evaluate herself based on the size and shape of her breasts, the happier she will be.
As women, we all want to feel good about ourselves. Whether we are plus-size or petite, having perfect, perky breasts is an illusion – one that should never compromise our femininity by placing unrealistic goals in the path of our success.
When a woman accepts and appreciates what is absolutely natural about her body she will gain a confidence and freedom that allows her to bask in the beauty of just being the unique and beautiful creature nature designed her to be.
By buying into the ‘perky breast’ syndrome, many women inadvertently perpetuate an unhealthy idea of what femininity really is and by doing so deny themselves the honor of their own individual femininity.
